900 mile cycle

Yesturday those of us who are going to Kandersteg next year did a 900 miles sponsored cycle at the scout hut.  We started at about 9:30AM and managed to complete the distance by 8:45PM.  We had 5 bikes set up in the hut and everyone took it in turns to do some mileage then swaped with someone else.  Henry completed the most amount of miles, 100!  There were about 20 of us taking it in turns to cycle with a little help from some parents.

Were not sure how much money was made from the sponsorship yet, but we know at least one scout has raised over £100.  There will be a rpize of a t-shirt for the scout who raises the most, donated by Dont Push It bikes of Bude.

As well as the cycling there we also had a book sale and had mulled wine, mince pies and tea and coffees for sale for the public who came down.

The scouts did incredably well, with us leaders having little time on the bikes as the scouts were so keen to do the cycling.

Pictures of the event are up on our picture web page.

More fundraising

Last Saturday the Scouts going to Kandersteg did a bag back at Sainsburys and managed to collect just under £200.  On Friday at the Scout wine and wisdom me made just under £60 selling our Christmas chocolate quiz.  And today we did a bag pack at Morrisons.  We had a great turn out and the money is currently being counted up.  I’ll let you know how much we raised once it’s all been counted :D

Next weekend is our sponsored cycle which will hopefully be a great day.  Aswell as the cycling there will also be a book sale and mince pies and mulled wine for supporters.  The public can also give us a helping hand to reach our 900 mile target by having a go at the cycling.

Kernow 24

Friday night we all trundled down to Nineashes (our county campsite) for Kernow 24.  It’s an explorer scout event just like Gilwell 24.  We set up our little camp just before the rain started.  The event started at 21:00.  There were 24 activities for the explorers to take part in ranging from archery, climbing, laser battle field, crafts, crate staking, mountain biking, a night hike, riffle shooting, cinema, computer games and many more.  This year the event was opened to Devon explorers.  Wez a sea scout leader from Torpoint joined us for the event.

The explorers went and did a few activities  before heading off on the night hike around midnight.  The all got back by 3:30AM where we then went and did a few more activities before breakfast.

The weather was very cold, windy and wet.  After breakfast several members of the unit did some crate stacking which they all did great in.  After lunch quite a few of us did archery with Shaun coming joint second out of the whole event and Kira came first with a score of 67.

At 8:00pm there was a campfire and the event was finished off with a great firework display.  Everyone got a Kernow survivor t-shirt, this year they were blue.

Everyone had a great time despite the weather and hypothermia and are all looking forward to next years event.  There is talk of the organisers moving the event forward a little, so hopefully they will so were not out in the wintery conditions.

Tuesday some of the leaders went out on Dartmoor to put out the letterbox walk.  That evening at explorers we had a halloween evening, and we all dressed up and played games.  We probally had a little too much chocolate :D

Wednesday a couple of leaders spent the day at a table top sale raising some funds.

Shooting

Last night the scout leader came along to do air riffle shooting with the explorers.  We had a full turn out which is a first.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and did really well hitting the targets.  4 scouts who will be moving up soon also came along so Skip could go through Kandersteg with them and a few other things.

:)

This term has gone off to quite a good start.  We’ve had 4 scoouts from Jacobstow move up to our section, but unfortuently lost one of our long time explorers :(

Plans for Kandersteg are well underway with an itinerary of activities started, fingers crossed for the ice climbing! and fundraising is underway.

During our unit meetings lately we’ve made catapults, the explorers have gone through some of the things they’d like to do at Kandersteg and have been on a Murder Mystery around Bude.  This week we should be having an old leader come down to talk about Bude’s scouting history (100 next year!) and the scout leader is coming down the week after to do some riffle shooting with us.

Skip has also been selected as the Cornish Contingent Leader for the 22nd World Jamboree in Sweden in 2011, so congrats to him :D

Summer

At the start of August the explorers went on summercamp.  More info on it will be added when i have the details. (I missed summercamp as i was on holiday and am not sure what they got up to).

On the 15th we had a cake stall at Bude carnival fete to raise money for our Kandersteg summercamp next year.  We made over £200.

The 17th was Marhamchurch Revel.  We had a crockery smashing stall and food tent.  The crockery smashing was very popular with the crowds and we just about sold out of hot dogs and campdonuts.

During the bankholiday weekend we held a camp so two of our leaders could get their greenfield permits.  The camp was attended by 5 scouts and 1 explorer.  Activities they took part in were catapults, crazy frisbee golf, backwoods cooking, firelighting and firelighting challenge, campfire, quizzes and more.  Our two leaders got presented with their greenfield awards.
